The public toilet has been closed for three months
Bizimungu Anastasia, a porter in Ngoga, said the public toilets had been closed for three months and they did not know why no one was using them.
He said they had no privacy issues but it was done by people who were passing by to buy goods or travelling to and from the Nyagartare Health Centre and hospital.
He said: “It has been about three months since the closure and the area started using electricity and water. There was a boy living there but he did not use it.
The problem is people are going to the doctor and we are using them to sell building materials.
Passengers don’t have to worry about being watched when they stop
A mother who cleans the road leading to Nyagartare Health Centre and Hospital, who did not want to be named, said many people chose to take shelter under trees in city parks or in shelters as public toilets were closed.
He said: “I will hate you if anyone who lives here leaves the house and goes to the shelter, but the men go to these trees. If you look carefully you will see where they are hiding.”
Niyodusenga Pierre, one of the workers who transports people and goods on bicycles in Nyagatare, said it was not appropriate for people to park their bikes on trees even if toilets were closed as they would pollute the city.
“If someone was smart and went and hung out in the trees and threw flies and other dirt, you would think that was acceptable, but it’s a big mistake,” he said.
A shop owner who wished to remain anonymous said the problem of tree pollution and odour at their parking spaces was severe, so the government decided to address the issue by getting a contractor to use the public toilets.
This is one of the places where travelers change toilets
We tried to contact the Nyagatare District Administration but the District Chief Gasana Stephen asked him to first ask his followers about the cleanliness and then provide complete information, but he eventually stopped answering the phone.
He said: “Let me first ask the tracker where it is because I know it works differently. Someone will use it and I will get back to you.”
