Nursing industry has a majority of female practitioners
The number of jobs in the health and welfare sector almost doubles between 1995 and 2023 to more than 1.8 million, which means that this sector will have the largest number of jobs in the Netherlands in 2023. However, the gender ratio remains roughly the same: in 2023, more than 80% of care jobs are held by women. In 1995, 78% of jobs in this sector were held by women.

More jobs in education, mostly held by women
In 1995, the nearly 500,000 jobs in the education sector were roughly equally divided between men and women. However, over the years, the number of jobs held by men has remained almost stable at around 250,000, while the number of jobs held by women has risen to 474,000. In 2023, women hold nearly two-thirds of all jobs in the education sector. The education sector includes all forms of public and private education, including formal education as well as cultural, sports and recreational education for non-professionals and car and motorcycle driving schools.

Around 90% of jobs in the construction industry are held by men. The number of jobs in the industry grew by 22% between 1995 and 2023. The growth in the industry is entirely due to the increase in self-employment, which accounted for 46% of all construction jobs in 2023.
