NTT drives Hong Kong smart city innovation with private 5G to meet new use cases

With Hong Kong’s first localised wireless broadband system (private) licence, the newly launched docomo 5G DX Square provides innovators with a stable and scalable wireless backbone for future smart city POCs.

HONG KONG (ANTARA/PRNewswire) – NTT Com Asia (NTT) has launched docomo 5G DX Square to build a technology and innovation ecosystem that will provide a major boost to Hong Kong’s smart city development. docomo 5G DX Square is an innovation lab designed from the ground up to allow local innovators to co-develop new AI, Edge and Private 5G (P5G) applications in Hong Kong’s first P5G environment. NTT is the first service provider to receive the Localized Wireless Broadband System (Private) License issued by the Hong Kong Communications Authority (OFCA).

docomo 5G DX Square is a smart city innovation center that brings together critical AI, Edge and P5G mobile connectivity in one location. It provides a high-performance, reliable and scalable platform for startups, enterprises, academic institutions and local suppliers to quickly realize their ideas and confidently transform proofs of concept into real-world prototypes. According to Grand View Research[1]the global private 5G network market size is estimated at USD 2.69 billion in 2024 and is expected to grow at a CAGR of 54.1% from 2024 to 2030, reaching USD 36 billion.

Unlike public 5G networks, NTT’s purpose-built standalone P5G network provides a dedicated, highly secure and reliable wireless connectivity solution, which is critical for smart city use cases that require fast data speeds, ultra-low latency and massive connectivity. By deploying the latest millimeter wave (mmWave) standalone technology, enterprises can fully realize the true benefits of P5G networks, which are an excellent upgrade or replacement for traditional wired or wireless solutions. In addition, due to NTT’s multi-vendor approach, the cost of deploying P5G is significantly reduced, making it comparable to Wi-Fi systems, thereby reducing customers’ capital expenditure and operating expenditure for owning P5G networks.
