Prime Minister Andrew Holness has praised the New Social Housing Programme (NSHP), noting that it is bringing “transformative change” to people’s lives.
The Prime Minister, speaking at a ribbon-cutting ceremony at a home in Barton, southwest of St. Catherine on Friday (June 7), noted that the scheme is aimed at providing comfortable housing for vulnerable Jamaicans.
He said MPs had been effective in coordinating people’s applications to benefit from the scheme and supporting them throughout the process.
He noted that MPs have information on issues affecting their constituents because they are in “direct contact with those in need”.
The Prime Minister said an important step in getting a house under the National Housing Programme (NSHP) is to provide proof of ownership or permission to occupy the plot on which the house is to be built.
Everard Warmington, the councillor for St. Catherine South West, encouraged residents interested in benefiting from the NSHP to contact his office.
“My help is more than just advice,” he said, noting that he helps people fill out application forms to ensure there are no mistakes and, if necessary, brings in a Justice of the Peace (JP) to certify matters relating to land ownership.
Three houses were handed over to beneficiaries during the Prime Minister’s visit to the South West Region of St. Catherine.
Among the new homeowners is Cassandra Pryce, a single mother of four.
“There is a sense of joy. When God opens a door like this, I thank and recognize all the people who contributed to it. It is great to have a councillor in the local area who understands our situation,” she said.
So far, the program has completed construction of 229 units, with another 54 units set to be completed in the coming days.
NSHP operates under the Housing, Opportunity, Production and Employment Program (HOPE) of the Department of Economic Growth and Job Creation.
The program aims to improve housing conditions for the country’s poorest people.
