NRA Deputy Director highlights key issues of high accident rate on OIC roads

In a recent interview with The Point, Mr. Janneh cited several factors that contribute to the problem and stressed the need for greater public awareness and responsible driving behavior.

He cited lack of familiarity with new road infrastructure as a major factor in the surge in accidents, with many drivers and pedestrians not fully understanding how to navigate and use upgraded roads that are designed to enhance and improve the commuting experience.

In addition, he pointed out the worrying attitude of drivers, especially young drivers, who saw the new road as a license to speed. “The new road is smooth, straight and comfortable, which leads many people to drive recklessly without regard for their own safety or the safety of others,” he said. “Current data shows that young drivers are the main victims of these accidents, which is often due to their disregard for safety on the highway.”

Another major issue Mr Jenner pointed out was the improper use of roundabouts. He claimed that many drivers were unaware of the rules of driving on roundabouts, leading to confusing and dangerous situations.

He therefore stressed the importance of slowing down when approaching a roundabout and giving priority to those already on the roundabout. Pedestrians should also use zebra crossings rather than trying to cross the road at the neck of a roundabout.

To address these challenges, he said, the NRA has drawn up plans to build pedestrian bridges and viaducts.

“While these measures have yet to be fully implemented,” he said, “in the interim, temporary solutions such as speed bumps and zebra crossings have been put in place to encourage drivers to slow down and allow pedestrians to cross the road safely.”

Mr. Jenner also highlighted the ongoing efforts of the NRA to create public awareness on road usage through television programmes and video advertisements in various local languages.

He reiterated the importance of educating drivers and pedestrians to prevent accidents and improve safety on OIC highways. “We will continue to take steps to improve safety along the highway,” he promised, emphasizing the NRA’s commitment to protecting lives on this important infrastructure.
