Mbarara: A section of youths in Ankole sub-district claiming to be part of the Patriotic Union of Uganda (PLU) want President Yoweri Museveni to allow the Chief of Staff of the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (CDF), General Muhuzi Kenerugaba, to retire so that he can freely participate in national political consultations ahead of the 2026 general elections.
In the long run, the commander-in-chief should act like a statesman and allow the PLU chairman to run for president in 2026.
Members of the Ankole PLU Youth League believe that General Muhoozi will be able to make political headway after his retirement and stand a chance to contest and win the 2026 general elections as president.
Besides this, they claim, General Museveni risks downplaying his past achievements.
Speaking to journalists on Thursday, August 8, 2024, Bruce Ainomugisha, the youth wing chief of the Ankole PLU, said General Museveni had made it clear on several occasions that he would have no reason to remain in power if he found a suitable leader elected by the people.
They further noted that when he was in Luwero, he made it clear that power would not be handed over to the “wolves” but to patriots who emerged victorious in democratic elections.
Based on the above background, members of the Youth League of Pakistan Youth League believe that General Muhooz Kenerugaba is the right person to serve as the next president.
“We all know that General Muhuzi always delivers excellent results wherever he is posted. We are confident that Muhuzi will be able to continue the developments and progress made during President Museven’s tenure, including ensuring stability and continuity of government by consolidating the gains of the revolution,” said members of the Ankole PLU Youth League, who are optimistic that General Muhuzi will firmly combat rampant corruption, a major problem in the country.
“As young patriots, we do not believe that President Museveni or the opposition can effectively fight corruption. Therefore, we as PLU patriots in agreement with other sections of the society such as the youth or Generation Z, the older generation, civil society, National Resistance Movement supporters, those who do not support the National Resistance Movement and all those who have been supporting a peaceful transition/handover of power to the next leader in a very stable manner, call and appeal to our greater Pan-Africanist, General Museveni to seriously consider handing over power to a capable and properly elected leader in 2026,” they pleaded.
