The king, who is the chief of Europe’s reigning monarchs, contracted the virus during a private stay on the Malaysian island of Langkawi and had to be hospitalized there for several days before returning to Oslo on Sunday, where he remains hospitalized.

“His Majesty’s health continues to improve and his overall condition is satisfactory,” the palace wrote on its website. “The infection is under control and the pacemaker should be implanted early next week.”precise.

The Queen had a temporary pacemaker installed on Saturday ahead of her return flight.

King Harald travels with the aid of a cane and is in fragile health. He has undergone heart surgery and has suffered from various respiratory ailments and infections in recent years.

However, he ruled out giving up his duties after his distant cousin Queen Margrethe II unexpectedly abdicated in Denmark at the age of 83 in late January in favour of her eldest son Frederick.

In his absence, 50-year-old Crown Prince Haakon took over as regent.
