A major political party in the north has distributed 50,000 leaflets urging people not to vote for any candidate in the upcoming presidential election. In the past few days, intelligence agencies reported that the leaflets have been distributed in many areas of the northeast, including Jaffna, Kilinochchi, Vavuniya, Batticaloa. It is said that the overseas Tamil diaspora funded this with the aim of exerting a huge influence on southern politics.

The papers also stressed that thousands of acres of land of their own people are being suppressed because the government is supporting Buddhistization by establishing new Sinhalese settlements in the northern and eastern provinces. After the war ended in 2009, various governments promised to permanently resolve the ethnic crisis in the north and east, but none of them has solved the problem. The paper also pointed out that the new president who will be appointed soon will not solve the problem.

It was therefore stressed that by refusing to vote in the upcoming presidential elections, the strength of the Tamil people could be demonstrated.

It also suggests the need for a separate government from the Sri Lankan government to provide self-government structures for the Tamils in the northern and eastern provinces through a unitary government policy and federal system of government. The Office of the Election Commissioner has also allegedly received complaints regarding the distribution of these leaflets.
