SEOUL (Reuters) – North Korea on Saturday expressed serious concern and strongly condemned a revised nuclear strategy plan approved by U.S. President Joe Biden this year.

“North Korea will, as always, do its utmost to enhance its strategic strength, manage and eliminate all kinds of security challenges that may arise from the dangerous nuclear posture adjustments by the United States, and resolutely respond to any form of nuclear threats,” the North’s Foreign Ministry said, using the country’s official name.

“The efforts of other sovereign states to strengthen their national defense capabilities to counter the growing U.S. nuclear threat must not be used as an excuse for the U.S. to strengthen its nuclear weapons and conduct aggression and provocative nuclear posture coordination,” the North Korean Defense Ministry added in a statement carried by state media KCNA.

The statement said, “No matter how desperately the United States exaggerates the ‘nuclear threat’ of other countries, North Korea will advance the construction of sufficient and reliable nuclear forces according to the established timetable and resolutely defend its national sovereignty and security interests.”

Earlier, the New York Times reported that the United States adjusted its deterrence strategy for the first time to focus on the expansion of China’s nuclear arsenal. The White House said on Tuesday that this confidential nuclear strategic plan is not aimed at a single country or threat.

China’s Foreign Ministry on Wednesday expressed serious concern about the report, which said the plan also seeks to prepare the United States for a possible coordinated nuclear challenge from China, Russia and North Korea.
