The Al Kuma regional emergency department announced the suspension of shared kitchen services at the centre for displaced persons.
The town of Kuma is located about 70 km east of El Fasher, the capital of North Darfur State, on the main West Ingazi road connecting Darfur to Khartoum, the capital of Sudan.
The director of the emergency department, Salih Harireen, told Radio Tamazuj on Monday that the decision was due to a lack of support.
“The shared kitchen project at the IDP centre stopped running after about two weeks due to lack of support and funding,” said Harilin, adding that efforts were being made to resume operations.
The kitchen provides food to the centre and its cessation will worsen the humanitarian situation for displaced persons and those fleeing the conflict in Kuma.
Harilin confirmed that conditions in the refugee centres are dire, and that the closure of shared kitchens and flooding caused by heavy rains will make the situation worse. He noted that some residents live in shelters built with local materials and need alternative shelter, tents and mosquito nets.
Harilin called on international and national organizations to provide urgent humanitarian assistance.
In addition, several students and Quran reciters graduated from the Al-Siraj Al-Muneer Quran Recitation Academy for Women in the Al-Kuma area.
The event was hosted by the Kuma Traditional Administrative Head Nazir Abdullah Adam Jozi and several other administrative leaders.
The graduation ceremony attracted local residents and representatives from various organizations.
