Russian political scientist Alexey Anpirogov, in an interview with Alfa News, referred to the telephone conversation between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Nikol Pashinyan.
Experts say that despite these negative trends, normalization of relations between Russia and Armenia is still possible.
“I think that despite all these negative trends, which are clearly visible in statements and actions, the possibility of normalizing relations between Russia and Armenia should not be written off. In general, I think that the mediation of the peace process that the Russian Federation can really offer will take into account the best interests of both parties and will be long-term.
Now, as far as we know, for example, Russia helped as an arbitration factor in the demarcation of borders, and as far as I know, there are actually maps of the Russian Federation where in every area you can see how the borders were drawn during the Soviet period.
This will be a deterrent factor, especially for the Azerbaijani side, which now often insists on unilateral border changes so that only Baku’s opinion is taken into account when delineating the future border between Azerbaijan and Armenia. Well, in a whole range of other aspects, the help of the Russian Federation is truly invaluable and unique. Neither the EU nor the United States can provide these, because these countries have never been involved in the Transcaucasian policy,” Anpirogov said.
Experts believe that Pashinyan should protect Armenia’s interests rather than some of his personal positions.
“I think that closed diplomacy is clearly also on the agenda of the Russian president’s visit to Azerbaijan, it serves the confidence factor, and now it is necessary to resume the negotiation process between the two sides, if both Azerbaijan and Armenia are willing to really work for a lasting peace.
And here, a mediator who can convey positions that are not heard in official negotiations is very important. I hope that Pashinyan will do his best to protect the interests of Armenia, rather than his personal positions as a politician, and accept that the President of the Russian Federation will always maintain channels of communication with the Azerbaijani side. In principle, Armenia cannot have.
The principle of diplomacy is that you should talk to everyone. If you say you will not conduct diplomacy with anyone, then your room for maneuver is immediately limited and it can only become a disastrous road to nowhere,” Anpirogov concluded.
