Transitional National Legislative Assembly (TNLA) spokesman Oliver Benjamin Mori on Friday denied reports that lawmakers received $40,000 in medical allowances.
Mori told reporters in Juba that some lawmakers had been attacked over the allegations.
He explained that the last time lawmakers received medical benefits was four years ago, for $15,000, which was half of what they were entitled to.
“Members of the state legislature receive no health benefits. The last time they received benefits was four years ago, when they received only $15,000, which is half of what they were entitled to,” Murray told reporters.
He said several lawmakers had died due to lack of proper medical treatment, adding that medical allowance was their right under the law to take care of them and their families.
The spokesman claimed that MPs were poor and some had difficulty attending parliamentary sessions as they did not have money to pay for travel fares.
South Sudan is in a serious crisis due to the sharp depreciation of its currency against the US dollar.
The devaluation of the South Sudanese pound has plunged the country into deeper inflation and widespread hardship.
