Night orienteering brings some extra fun to most people, but it also brings some extra dangers that we all need to be aware of and try to minimize. What if our headlights don’t work? What if we get hurt? What if, what if?

Hopefully we’re not trying to teach anyone how to suck eggs, but it’s worth a reminder If something does happen and we are not prepared, others may be inconvenienced or worse.. Therefore, there are a few items we should all seriously consider taking with us when we run – and some of them really shouldn’t be discussed!

– Main headlight (obviously!)
– Compass (obviously!)
– Backup headlamp or equivalent (required)*
– Whistle (essential)
– Cell Phone – The organizer/planner’s number is on the map for a reason!

* Note: Backup battery for main headlight no Swap in a separate backup flashlight, as it could be more than just a dead or malfunctioning battery.

The nights are cooler, so please consider what to wear. What if you are really injured, or just don’t feel like running at a normal pace? If you are not running or walking at a normal pace, you will get cold quickly. We all run at night in the winter, so keep this in mind.

If you are new to night orienteering Be aware that this may take longer than “normal” – much longer for some peopleAlso, if you are not yet at TD5 level, you really should do this activity during the day before taking part in night orienteering, as the Deeside Night Cup (long distance) and Mini Cup (short distance) programs do not exempt you from running after dark. Maybe you are at TD5 level but have never done night orienteering before – Talk to someone about Shadowrun. Send a message using the club member email saying you’d like some guidance and which DNC events you plan to attend, and someone will respond.
