Conservationists ask Buhari to launch Great Green Wall project

The group made the plea at the 25th Annual General Meeting of the Foundation held in Lagos last week, where the Chairman of NCF, Izoma Philip Asiodu, said the failure to implement such good projects had resulted in desert sand destroying thousands of square kilometres of former grazing lands, turning them into uninhabitable deserts, turning hundreds of thousands of herders into environmental refugees and increasing insecurity in the region.
Recently, the Federal Government announced a N10 billion investment in the implementation of the African Union-backed Great Green Wall programme.
The project was initiated by African countries and aims to unite 11 countries to plant trees on the African continent and bring a green space to the Sahara Desert, hoping to slow the spread of desertification and improve the lives and livelihoods of communities affected by climate change.
The Nigerian portion of the project stretches from Zamfara and Kebbi states on the northwestern axis to Borno state, the easternmost point on Nigeria’s northern border.
Asiodu, however, noted that similar government and donor projects had been announced in the past, “but unfortunately, they failed miserably due to neglect and poor execution, which often excluded community participation and ownership.”
