The Federal Government has called for collaboration with State Youth Commissioners to harness their expertise to design and implement comprehensive policies to accelerate youth development in Nigeria.
The Federal Minister of Youth Development, Jamila Bio Ibrahim, made the call yesterday in Abuja during a consultative meeting with youth commissioners from all 36 states of the federation and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
Dr. Ibrahim stressed the importance of a strong collaborative approach that would work in tandem with the State Commissioners to conduct in-depth consultations and analysis to ensure that the unique needs and challenges faced by young people in different states are adequately documented.
The Minister invited the Commissioners to participate in all policies and initiatives of the Federal Government such as the restructuring of the Nigeria Youth Investment Fund, the Presidential Youth Enterprise Cluster Initiative, the establishment of the National Youth Development Bank, the reform of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), the National Youth Skills Programme, and the 30% youth quota for all federal appointments.
She urged them to take these programmes back to their states, engage communities and ensure that young people fully benefit from these opportunities.
At the same time, Jamila announced the proposed establishment of a National Youth Commission, which will serve as an important platform for coordination and cooperation among various stakeholders in the field of youth development.
According to her, “Members of the council include the Minister, Minister of State, Permanent Secretary, Youth Commissioners of the states and the Federal Capital Territory and other key stakeholders of the ministry.”
“This body will play a central role in ensuring that our policies are effectively implemented and that the voices of youths are heard at the highest levels of government. I look forward to working closely with my fellow members of the Commission as we chart a unified path for youth development in Nigeria.”
Secretary of the Youth Mission in the Federal Capital Territory, Abdullahi Suleiman Ango and the Oyo State Commissioner, Wasilat Adegoke, stressed the importance of the consultative meeting as a critical opportunity to launch impactful youth empowerment programmes at both the state and federal levels.
They urged the youths to seize the existing youth development programmes and work towards maintaining peace and unity in the country.
