It has been reported that some persons suspected to be thugs who have yet to be identified have burnt down the Redeemed Christian Church of God (Champion Zonal Headquarters) located on Federal College of Education Road, Kontagora, Niger State.

It is understood that the incident that took place last weekend also happened at the same church 10 years ago, when thugs took advantage of a crisis in the area and burned down the worship center.

In previous attacks, church management was later warned not to rebuild the church.

The Chairman of the Niger State Chapter of the Christian Association of Nigeria, Dr Bruce Dawua Johna, has strongly condemned the latest attack on the Church of the Christian Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria on Sunday, describing the incident as barbaric and unnecessary.

Johanna called on the government to intervene, adding that Uttar Pradesh has freedom of religious belief.

He said: “Niger State has a tradition of religious freedom and I am sure that if the government and security agencies take action, it will go a long way in resolving any tensions that may get out of control.

“We hope that the law will bring due punishment. Frankly speaking, such problems must be controlled and those who do such things should be caught and face legal sanctions.”

Speaking to news on Sunday, the assistant pastor of the church, Samson Ogbebor, explained that he received a distress call regarding the fire at the church.

He said: “When I got there, I saw a church that had been there for 20 years had been burnt down and the property had been looted by the thugs.

“This church has faced a lot of challenges. About 10 years ago, thugs came here and completely burned it down, and we rebuilt it with our own efforts.

“They had tried several times without success and refused to let us make proper repairs to the roof, so we decided to use it for worship, but look what they did.”
