On August 28, 2024, the Chiefs of Staff of the Nigerien and Nigerian Armed Forces, Brigadier General Moussa Sarau Balmu and General Christophe Moussa, met in Niamey to discuss regional security issues. The meeting was held against the backdrop of multiple security challenges facing the two countries, especially along their shared 1,500 km border, where terrorist groups such as Boko Haram have been active since 2015.
The two sides agreed to strengthen bilateral cooperation, especially in the areas of joint operations, intelligence exchange and tactical coordination. They recognized the seriousness of the threat posed by the circulation of weapons and pledged to join forces to combat this phenomenon in order to ensure security in the border area.
The two countries reaffirmed their commitment to maintaining good-neighborly relations despite recent tensions caused by ECOWAS’ decision to intervene militarily in Niger following the events of July 26, 2023. General Balmu stressed the importance of strengthening cooperation to address common challenges, including not only security challenges, but also social, cultural, economic and energy challenges.
A dialogue committee was formed to facilitate discussion of common issues and adjust strategies in light of the changing nature of security threats. The military leaders of both countries hope that this meeting will be a turning point in military-to-military relations and strengthen regional stability, which is crucial for the socio-economic development of both countries.
