This Wednesday, August 14, families in León celebrate Griteria Chiquita, a festival of gratitude to Our Mother Maria, full of tradition and the joy of living in peace.

This was emphasized by Nicaraguan Vice President Rosario Murillo.

“Today we celebrate our Mother Mary with great fanfare in Leon, where miracles were performed,” he said.

He commented that the faithful celebrate the Gritería Chiquita because it is believed that the Virgin Mary performed a miracle of intercession 77 years ago that prevented the city of León from falling in ash and sand.

“So we celebrate, we sing, we honor the Virgin Mary, we also celebrate our gastronomy and our cultural traditions, the joy of living in peace. How far we have come in consolidating a sense of peace and a culture of peace, a peace that provides us with security to work and to move forward,” he added.

The Mayor of León, Comrade Gisela Lacayo, highlighted the participation of families from the neighbourhood, communities and the municipality, who celebrated the Solemnity of the Assumption with enthusiasm and devotion.

Likewise, in the old town of Chinandega, Mayor María del Transito Guevara reported that the municipality celebrated the “Gritería Chiquita” with the distribution of 700 nacatamales to families of the faithful at noon.

The mayor stressed the peace and tranquility that the National Police guarantee in every place where this tradition is celebrated, so that people come from the city and from remote communities of the municipality of El Viejo with their hats.

The “Gritería Chiquita” celebration is held to thank the Virgin Mary for her intercession in August 1947, which caused Cerro Negro, Nicaragua’s youngest volcano, to stop its tremors and its incessant rain of ash that threatened the destruction of León, El Sauce and Corinto.
