An ESPN survey of 15 NFL scouts found that Joe Burrow, Geno Smith and Tyrod Taylor were the most common comparisons for Colorado quarterback Shad Sanders Jordan Reed report.
According to Reid, one AFC North scout compared Sanders to Burrow because of his ability to perform under pressure.
“He was called Burrow because they never backed down from high-pressure situations and played with a lot of momentum,” the area scout said, according to Reid. “Was there a lot of things that needed to be worked out with Sanders? Of course, but it was that calming presence that brought Joe to the AFC, and he was successful right away.”
According to Reid, one of the high-pressure situations that scouts noticed was when Sanders led Colorado to a comeback win in double overtime in Week 3 of the 2023 season. With less than a minute left in the game, Sanders completed a 45-yard touchdown pass.

One AFC executive said Sanders reminded him of Taylor because of the “consistency” Sanders has maintained after success at Jackson State and Colorado.
“Tyrod’s consistency is why he’s stayed in the league, (but) I’m not saying this kid is going to be a sixth-round pick like Tyler was,” the executive told Reid.
In early mock drafts, Sanders was projected as a potential top-10 pick, in part because of the value of pre-draft quarterbacks, as Brent Sobleski Made famous by Bleacher Report.
He’s not projected as a No. 1 pick like Burrow was in 2020, but he’s currently projected to go higher than Smith (Round 2) or Taylor (Round 6).
How high Sanders climbs on teams’ draft boards this season will depend in part on the Bison’s improved roster, as he allowed 52 sacks during Colorado’s 4-8 season. Next season, with a stronger offensive line, Sanders can work to avoid sacks while giving him more opportunities to perform in meaningful games.
