Press release:
The Sahara Forest Project worked with the Bellona Foundation, Aker Horizon, the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and several other partners to build an arena at the COP27 conference in Sharm el-Sheikh in November.
On Thursday 18 August, the Sahara Forest Project, Bellona Foundation, Aker Horizon, the Norwegian Government, the City of Oslo, SINTEF, Vow ASA, Pathfinder International, the Norwegian Africa Business Association (NABA) and We Play Green launched a new COP27 initiative for members of the Norwegian media on board the Bellona ship Kallinika as part of the Soka Political Conference in Arendal, Norway.
The Sahara Forest Project was launched globally at COP15 in Copenhagen in 2009. The first SFP pilot facility was officially inaugurated at COP18 in Doha, Qatar. Since then, SFP staff have participated in most subsequent COPs, including ambitious efforts at COP21 in Paris in 2015 and COP26 in Glasgow in 2021.
“The Sahara Forest Project sees COP27 in Sharm El Sheikh as a critically important milestone to determine if the international community is on track to achieve the UN Sustainable Development Goals by 2030. The Sahara Forest Project team will travel to Sharm El Sheikh in November to showcase global climate-smart solutions for how to produce food in arid areas and green deserts to decision-makers,” said General Manager of the Sahara Forest Project Kjetil Stake.
Steck specifically mentioned that in the latest IPCC report in April 2022, the demonstration transmitter station in Aqaba, Jordan was highlighted as a case study and good example of a cross-sectoral approach to addressing global warming.
Frederic Hauge, founder of SFP and founder and president of Bellona, also spoke at the event. Bellona attended the first COP in Rio de Janeiro in 1992 and stressed that this year will celebrate 30 years of travel advocacy and influence on the world stage.
“Bellona is proud to have moved from identifying problems to actively helping to solve them. I look forward to travelling to Sharm el-Sheikh where we will work with our partners to come up with solutions. To solve the climate crisis, civil society and business must collaborate, and that is exactly what we will do in Sharm el-Sheikh” said Frederic Hauge, founder of Bellona.

“It will undoubtedly be a tough summit. It is also the COP in Africa and the focus will be on loss, damage and climate finance. An important part of the summit will be the activities around the negotiations. In a world facing a serious climate and environmental crisis, finding solutions is key” Norway’s Minister of Climate and Environment Espen Bart Eide said at the press conference.
The launch was also attended by key partner the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. In his wonderful speech, State Secretary Bjørg Sandkjær stressed the following points:
“Climate influences everything we do and we are working with the countries most affected by the climate crisis. It’s a good thing that we are able to help Norwegian stakeholders participate in international dialogues at these summits, and you actually have to There This is an urgent priority. We will combine climate and development policy as the superstructure of everything we do.”
Aker Horizons brings concrete solutions to COP27. They have established companies to develop technological solutions and implement large-scale projects in offshore wind, solar, carbon capture and clean hydrogen in 18 countries and five continents. In Africa, Aker Horizons has developed renewable energy projects in South Africa, Egypt, Senegal and Ghana through its portfolio company Mainstream Renewable Power.
“In light of the ongoing climate and energy crisis, international cooperation and solidarity are more important than ever. Closer collaboration between countries and between the public and private sectors is essential if we are to successfully achieve our stated climate goal of net zero emissions by 2050. Aker Horizons is a driving force in developing innovative and profitable green solutions for industry and we look forward to contributing, together with Bellona and the Norwegian government, to the important climate progress at COP27 in Sharm El Sheikh.” said Marianne Stigset, Head of Communications at Aker Horizons.
A big thank you to His Excellency Ambassador Richard Wood for his speech on the way from the successful Glasgow COP26 in 2021 to this year’s COP27 in Egypt. We are also delighted to have partners from SINTEF, Vow ASA, We Play Green and NABA on board the ship.
There will be more events to come.
