In his first official decision, new British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has abandoned plans to deport illegal immigrants to Rwanda.

“The Rwanda plan is dead and buried before it has even started. I am not ready to continue using a trick that is not working,” Starmer said today after the first cabinet meeting of the new Labour government, according to Bild.

The bill to deport illegal immigrants from the UK to Rwanda was a flagship project of former chancellor Rishi Sunak, who proposed asylum seekers who entered the UK illegally should be deported to Rwanda.

The proposal has sparked heated debate and opposition from human rights activists, but Sunak is still trying to make the so-called Rwanda scenario a reality. The project has cost the UK Treasury hundreds of millions of pounds.

Tens of thousands of people cross the English Channel illegally every year to reach British shores, most of them in small boats, and the British government must spend billions of pounds every year to provide hotels and other accommodation for illegal immigrants.
