The ministry sent a letter to JCNP

NASSAU | The Ministry of Youth, Sports and Culture has issued an order establishing the rules for participation in the 2024/2025 Junkanoo season.

For years, The Bahamas News has been exposing corruption by groups who collect thousands of dollars in taxes but fail to show and account for the funds they raise for the parade year after year.

The Bahamas News Agency is investigating how the JCNP (the parade management body) allowed many A and B groups to collect seed money from Bahamian taxpayers, yet to date have not participated in the parade and have not given any explanation as to where the public funds went!

Now, in a letter dated June 3rd written by Junkanoo director Mr Ellery Deveaux to JCNP chairman Dion Miller, all groups presenting on Bay Street must produce: a business licence or NPO certificate, a tax compliance certificate and NIB insurance information (blue card), bank account information and a report of seed funding expenses received in 2023/2024 (with receipts). For some groups, this is a challenge.

Not only did the Prodigal Son group attempt to defraud Junkanoo of seed money by not participating in last year’s march, BP also confirmed that several groups had been taking funds from the ministry over the years, not registering their businesses, not participating in the march, and absconding with the money.

The Bahamas News Agency is now wondering what people like Brian Adderley will do now when his B Group appears to report these new funding request criteria to the Ministry of Youth Sports and Culture? What does YINNER GA do now?!

The Bahamas News Agency agrees with the new standards currently being set for Jukanoo and we intend to speak more on this issue and the wrongdoings affecting the Jukanoo hinterland. Many of these incompetent clique leaders who have been sucking the public treasury for years are unaccountable and have no accountability, they need to step down!
