The Department of Surface Transport (DoST) yesterday launched a new mobile and web application, ‘Bhutan Road Safety Watch’, to create public awareness about frequent transport disruptions caused by flash floods, landslides and road maintenance.
Landslides, mudslides and flash floods are the main causes of road congestion in the country. Last year, the country experienced about 340 road congestion incidents, of which 16% were major traffic jams.
The new app is available on Android, iOS and web-based systems and will provide real-time updates and information on road conditions.
According to Dhan Raj Chhetri, deputy executive engineer at the road maintenance planning and GIS department of the Indian Ministry of Science and Technology, the application can help users easily locate and identify the type of road closure, whether it is due to natural disasters or road maintenance works.

“The imagery capabilities associated with the roadblock information can help users judge the size and severity of the obstacle and estimate the time required to clear it,” he said.
Thinley Wangchuk, an engineer at Thailand’s Ministry of Science and Technology, said the app has features such as roadblock information, road maintenance, warning messages and road access updates.
“Commuters can also see real-time information on road obstructions caused by snowfall, slope collapse, rock and debris falls, and landslides.”
“The app also allows passengers to send roadblock updates to administrators through the Facebook icon in the app,” he said. However, the details will be verified and updated accordingly.
More than 100 field engineers across the country will update real-time traffic information.
Bhutan Road Safety Monitoring App has four main roads – AH 48, PNH 01, PNH 03 and PNH 05 – these are the main road categories to which all other roads in the country are connected.

The application is part of a technical cooperation program project of the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) that started in 2016 and ends in July 2023.
The former G2C Office developed the user requirements for the app in 2019, while the GovTech agency developed the detailed functionality of the app in 2022.
A total of Ngultrum 800,000 was invested in the development of the app.
