Chinese President Xi Jinping said in Beijing on Thursday afternoon that as two major countries, China and the United States should be responsible to history, to their people and to the world, and be the source of stability for world peace and the promoters of common development.
Xi Jinping made the above remarks when meeting with visiting US President’s Assistant for National Security Affairs (National Security Advisor) Sullivan at the Great Hall of the People.
Xi Jinping pointed out that in this changing and turbulent world, countries should unite and cooperate, rather than divide and confront; people should be open and progressive, rather than reject and regress.
Xi Jinping emphasized that in the exchanges between the two major countries of China and the United States, the first thing to do is to establish a correct strategic concept and to answer this overall question: Are China and the United States competitors or partners?
Xi Jinping pointed out that China’s foreign policy is open and transparent, its strategic intentions are aboveboard, and it has a high degree of continuity and stability.
China adheres to the path of peaceful development, concentrates on managing its own affairs well, will continue to comprehensively deepen reform, and constantly improve and develop the socialist system with Chinese characteristics that suits China’s national conditions.
While achieving its own development, China is also willing to work with all countries to achieve common development and build a community with a shared future for mankind.
Xi Jinping also pointed out that China’s policy toward the United States is highly consistent.
Xi Jinping pointed out that although the situation between China and the United States and China-US relations have undergone great changes, China’s goal of developing stable, healthy and sustainable China-US relations has not changed, the principles of handling China-US relations based on mutual respect, peaceful coexistence and win-win cooperation have not changed, the position of firmly safeguarding national sovereignty, security and development interests has not changed, and the efforts to inherit the traditional friendship between the Chinese and American people have not changed.
Xi Jinping hopes that the United States will work with China, view China and China’s development in a positive and rational manner, view each other’s development as an opportunity rather than a challenge, and work with China to find the right path for China and the United States, two countries with different civilizations, systems and paths, to coexist peacefully and develop together on this planet, and improve development on the basis of maintaining stability in China-US relations.
Sullivan, the first U.S. national security adviser to visit China since 2016, arrived in Beijing on Tuesday for a three-day visit.
At the invitation of Wang Yi, member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and director of the Office of the Central Foreign Affairs Commission, he came to China to attend China-US strategic communication.
Sullivan conveyed US President Biden’s greetings to President Xi Jinping and thanked President Xi Jinping for the meeting.
He said that since the meeting between the two heads of state in San Francisco, the two sides have conscientiously implemented their common consensus and made positive progress.
Sullivan said that the strategic communication with Director Wang Yi during his visit to China was in-depth, candid, substantive and constructive. He reiterated that the United States does not seek a new Cold War, does not seek to change China’s system, and that revitalizing the U.S. alliance is not directed against China. The United States does not support “Taiwan independence” and does not seek conflict with China.
Sullivan said that the United States’ one-China policy has not changed and it has no intention of using Taiwan as a tool to contain China.
Sullivan said that the United States hopes to maintain strategic communication with China and find a path for peaceful coexistence and sustainable development of U.S.-China relations.
He said that President Biden looks forward to communicating with President Xi Jinping again at an early date.
Xi Jinping asked Sullivan to convey his greetings to President Biden and expressed China’s willingness to maintain communication with President Biden to jointly lead and promote the development of China-US relations.
