New Jersey Transit riders will soon find a silver lining to their summer commutes.

Governor Murphy announced Thursday that all passengers will receive free fares during the week of August 26 to September 2 as a thank you for riding and Deal with this year’s frustrating traffic delays and breakdowns.

“Given the challenges our customers have faced this summer, we are offering NJ Transit customers a one-week fare reduction,” Murphy said. “We are working closely with Amtrak to investigate and address the issues that have occurred this summer, particularly on the Northeast Corridor, and we hope this fare reduction will provide some relief to our customers.”

During the fare discount period, fares will be waived for all vehicles on the New Jersey Transit network, including buses, trains and light rail lines.

Pass holders who have already purchased August passes will automatically receive a 25% discount on September passes.

Murphy said NJ Transit recognizes the impact service issues over the past few months have had on riders and will continue to work to improve the travel experience.

Following recent service disruptions along Amtrak’s Northeast Corridor, which is shared with New Jersey Transit, the two companies have been working to improve service on this critical rail line, the busiest corridor in the U.S. These actions include increasing equipment inspections and inspecting and repairing overhead wires, track signal systems and substations.

New Jersey Transit is working with Amtrak to expedite the replacement of substations, overhead wires, and transmission and signal lines.
