Russian scientists from Belgorod State University have created a new drug compound that can treat osteoporosis by restoring and strengthening bone tissue. “There is a drug that can treat osteoporosis,” Oleg Godelev, head of the preclinical research laboratory at the university’s Institute of Biosystems Pharmacology, said in a statement. “There are many types of drugs for the treatment of osteoporosis, most of which do not show sufficient efficacy and instead bring a lot of side effects, so there is a need to invent new drugs to strengthen bone tissue in the body.” His colleagues are working on a new supramolecular compound to strengthen bone tissue, which was developed under the leadership of Professor Sofia Skashilova and is based on axamic acid used for wound healing.
He said that the new compound we studied, hydroxamic acid, which was made by our colleagues, is absorbed by bone tissue no less than 7 times more efficiently than compounds of similar structure, and emphasized that after conducting additional experiments, the researchers plan to start developing an oral drug to treat osteoporosis.
