Addis Ababa, July 8, 2024 (Address) Newly elected British Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has called for an urgent ceasefire in Gaza.
Prime Minister Starmer reiterated the need for an immediate ceasefire and a two-state solution in telephone conversations with Israeli and Palestinian leaders.
In discussions with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Prime Minister Starmer stressed the “clear and urgent need for a ceasefire, the repatriation of hostages and an immediate increase in the volume of humanitarian aid to civilians.”
Before entering Downing Street, Prime Minister Starmer was criticized by the public for not calling for a ceasefire like then-Prime Minister Rishi Sunak. Starmer was also accused of supporting all Israeli measures against Palestine, including cutting off water and electricity supplies to Gaza.
Israel continues its offensive on the Gaza Strip despite a call for a ceasefire from one of its main allies.
The British Prime Minister assured Israeli leaders that Britain will continue to engage in vital cooperation with Israel to curb the threat.
Prime Minister Starmer also spoke to Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas about a ceasefire.
A spokesman for the British Prime Minister’s Office briefed reporters on the topics discussed by the two leaders. “While discussing the importance of reform and ensuring Palestine’s international legitimacy, the Prime Minister stated that his long-standing policy of recognizing Palestine’s contribution to the peace process has not changed, which is an inalienable right of the Palestinians,” the spokesman told reporters.
During the conversation, Mahmoud Abbas stressed the importance of Britain recognizing the state of Palestine, Al Jazeera reported.
During the 50-day war, more than 38,000 people were killed, mostly women and children, and about 2 million were displaced.
