The National Environmental Standards and Regulation Enforcement Agency (NESREA) has closed 46 facilities in ten states for noncompliance with various environmental laws.
The affected facilities are located in Borno, Gombe, Ogun, Enugu, Edo, Osun, Oyo, Plateau, Nasarawa and Taraba states.

The facilities were shut down due to their refusal to comply with state environmental regulations.
NESREA director general Dr. Innocent Barikor explained in a statement that their crimes included violations of the Environmental Impact Assessment Act, lack of environmental audit reports and failure to prepare and implement an environmental management plan.
Barrickle also added that some facilities were penalized for reasons including not installing wastewater treatment plants, not providing necessary permits related to their operations, and poor management.
He expressed dissatisfaction with the non-compliant status of many facilities and warned that the trend was unhealthy and harmful to citizens and the environment.
“It is frustrating that even though these non-compliant facilities have received compliance concern notices as required by law, they continue to operate in a manner that harms the environment.”
He insisted that the agency would continue to enforce the provisions of 35 national environmental laws and regulations and would ensure that appropriate penalties were meted out to violators.
“Laws are made for the smooth functioning of society and compliance with the law promotes overall development. We encourage Nigerians to be true environmental pioneers, obey the law and report any environmental violations,” he added.
