The NBA’s vice president and chief operating officer said the league wants to establish a strong federal regulatory framework for legal gambling in the United States.
Mark Tatum’s comments came a day after a New York man was charged in the sports betting scandal that prompted the NBA to ban former Toronto Raptors center Jontay Porter from playing for life.

Tatum did not comment on the criminal case but said the gradual legalization of sports betting in U.S. states made it possible to track the violations that led to Porter’s suspension.
Porter is not named in the court complaint, but the specific description of “Player 1” in the complaint matches details of the former Raptors player’s downfall this spring. Federal prosecutors in Brooklyn declined to comment on whether Porter is under investigation.
Brooklyn U.S. Attorney Breon Peace said the alleged co-conspirator and “Player 1” were involved in “a brazen and illegal betting scheme that had a corrupting influence on two games and countless bets.”
