Navy seizes Indian trawler for poaching

A special operation conducted by the Sri Lanka Navy has seized an Indian trawler (01) that was poaching in Sri Lankan waters and arrested 11 Indian fishermen. The operation was conducted on August 23, 2024 near Pedro Point in Jaffna.

The Navy continues to conduct regular patrols and operations in Sri Lankan waters to curb illegal fishing practices by foreign fishing vessels, taking into account the impact of these practices on the livelihoods of local fishermen.

As an extension of these efforts, the Northern Naval Command discovered a group of Indian fishing boats engaging in illegal fishing in Sri Lankan waters. In response, the Northern Naval Command deployed fast attack boats to expel Indian fishing boats poaching near Pedro Point. The operation resulted in the seizure of 01 Indian fishing boats and the arrest of 11 Indian fishermen who continued to remain in Sri Lankan waters.

The seized trawler along with 11 Indian fishermen were taken to Kankesanthurai port where they will be handed over to Mailadi Fisheries Inspector for further legal action.

With this arrest, the Indian Navy has seized a total of 45 Indian trawlers and 333 Indian fishermen involved in poaching in Sri Lankan waters in 2024 and handed them over to the authorities for legal proceedings.
