Ms. Zr. Groningen intercepted 2,177 kg of cocaine in the Caribbean. This happened as early as May 16, but it was only announced now.

Both speedboats were loaded with drugs. The speedboats were spotted by a Caribbean Coast Guard maritime patrol aircraft. The MS Zr. Groningen then sailed towards the suspicious boats.
US helicopters stationed on board took off near the speedboat. Two FRISCs from Grongen were also deployed. These interceptor boats carried a squadron of Marines and US Maritime Law Enforcement Teams.
The four suspects surrendered only after they fired shots at the outboard motor. Like the drugs, they were handed over to the US Coast Guard. Currently, the cocaine has been destroyed. The suspects are being prosecuted in the United States.

Third drug transport
This is the third interception of a drug shipment in which the Groningen HNLMS has been involved. The patrol vessel has been sailing in the Caribbean Sea as a station ship since April 2024. The vessel is used, among other things, for counter-narcotics operations. This is done in cooperation with the US Coast Guard and the Caribbean Coast Guard on a rotational basis.
