The Indian Navy on Friday arrested 11 Indian poachers along with a fishing boat, bringing the total number of poachers arrested this year to 333, navy spokesman Captain Gayan Wickramasinghe said.
He said the latest detention took place in international waters off Point Pedro in the North Sea.
The arrest was made during a routine navy patrol in northern waters on Friday.
He said the seized trawler and 11 Indian fishermen were then taken to Kankesanthurai port and handed over to Mailadi fisheries inspector for legal action.
Meanwhile, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Stalin protested against the arrest of 11 Indian fishermen and called for their immediate and unconditional release.
“I am deeply concerned about yet another arrest of fishermen from Tamil Nadu,” Stalin said in a letter to Indian External Affairs Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar.
He said the fishermen were arrested while fishing in the southeast of Kodiakalai in Nagapattinam district.
Besides, the Chief Minister added that in the last two weeks, there have been several incidents of unidentified persons from Sri Lanka attacking fishermen at sea and the issue needs to be addressed immediately.
“I therefore urge you to take immediate and concrete diplomatic efforts to ensure the speedy release of all our fishermen and their boats,” Stalin told Jaishankar.
