Naupoto: The Constitution does not have a unifying effect

Opposition MP Viliame Naupoto claimed the 2013 Constitution had not had a unifying effect on the Fijian people.

In a weekend statement in parliament, Nopoto said this was a flaw in the current constitution because the process for drafting it was flawed.

“There is a huge divide, mostly political, on whether to support or oppose this constitution. One of the reasons is that people think this constitution is associated with or aligned with a certain political party.”

“Since the first elections under the constitution were held in 2014, the constitution has been the subject of criticism and sometimes ridicule both inside and outside parliament. There have been repeated calls from individuals and organizations to review the constitution.”

“The Constitution requires that this Constitution be amended and I urge the members of this House to seriously consider the importance and urgency of returning this Constitution to the people for scrutiny and, if necessary, amendment.”

Naupoto added that reviewing and amending the Constitution was never against anything.

“This is not a party that is against anyone or against politics. It is for the people, for nation building, for democracy, and this is how we perfect our young democracy.”
