A total of 145 in-state wards who will attend high school in September have been recognized by the Child Protection and Family Services Agency (CPFSA) for their outstanding performance in the 2024 Elementary School Performance (PEP) Program.
The agency presented them with awards and trophies at its annual PEP Awards Ceremony and Symposium held at the Jamaica Convention Centre in downtown Kingston on Thursday (August 15).
During the event, 39 students who scored above 300 points received special awards.
Top boys and girls from across the island and from the four regions of CPFSA were also recognised.
In her speech, Minister of Education and Youth Fayval Williams commended CPFSA for its commitment to providing unwavering support and guidance to children in state care across Jamaica.
She noted that the day is meant to recognize students who have overcome adversities and demonstrated academic excellence.
She said: “Today we celebrate the incredible achievements of students who have not only faced challenges but overcame them through determination and excellence.”
“CPFSA plays a vital role in ensuring every child has the support they need to succeed, and today’s event is a testament to that commitment,” she noted.
Minister Williams stressed the importance of education as a tool for personal empowerment and encouraged students to approach their upcoming high school journey with confidence.
She assured them that the Ministry, in partnership with CPFSA, remains committed to providing the necessary care and assistance to help them succeed.
In her message, CPFSA CEO Laurette Adams-Thomas implored parents and guardians to “continue to guide, support and listen to your children as they embark on their next chapter. Remember, we are all working together to ensure their success.”
In her guidance to students, she encourages them to seize new opportunities, try new activities, and make smart decisions.
She encouraged the children to believe in themselves. “With determination, creativity and kindness, you can overcome any challenge. We are so proud of you and excited to see the amazing things you will achieve,” Mrs. Adams-Thomas said. In addition to recognizing and celebrating the children’s achievements, the school also provided the children with necessary school supplies and held workshops for the children and their parents.
The sessions are designed to help children prepare mentally and emotionally for high school, with a focus on personal responsibility and how to protect themselves. Parents are also provided with support to help them cope with this transition.
“We share information on how to better relate to children as they go through the growing pains of puberty, while also emphasizing positive discipline,” Mrs. Adams-Thomas explained.
