“On behalf of the Naha community, I would like to express my gratitude to the Australian Government for their continued commitment to this project. The Naha community will always support us in any way we can,” said Mr Robert Pisu, community representative for the project.
More than 25 leaders from Naha and surrounding communities in East Honiara have approved the next steps in the construction of the new Naha Fertility and Urban Health Centre, which will cost SDG 250 million/AUD 45 million.
At the project’s fourth Naha community leaders meeting, main works contractor Reeves-ICON was introduced to outline key construction dates that required community attention.
Mr. Robert Pisu, a representative of the project community, praised the project and said the community would support the construction of the project.
“On behalf of the Naha community, I would like to thank the Australian Government for its continued commitment to this project. The Naha community will always do whatever we can to support it.”
Solomon Islands Ministry of Health and Medical Services (MHMS) Oversight Permanent Secretary Dr Gregory Jilini expressed his gratitude to Australia for its continued support to the Solomon Islands health sector.
“With this state-of-the-art facility, mothers will be able to receive the best possible antenatal and postnatal care while alleviating pressure on the state’s referral hospitals.”
Dr Gilini also welcomed the fact that the facility will provide dental, pathology, X-ray, ultrasound and pharmacy services to the community.
Honiara City Council director of medical services Dr Lawrence Dio said the community would continue to be updated as the project progressed.
“Our goal is to minimise disruption to the community and health services while completing the project as quickly as possible.”
Infrastructure Australia Counsellor Mr Craig Gillis thanked community leaders for their involvement in the project and commitment to keeping people informed.
“With your continued support, in less than 24 months, the Naha community will be walking into a brand new, fully-equipped medical facility that will set a new benchmark for quality medical care.”
Mr Gillis reiterated the commitment made by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Defence Richard Marrs MP during his recent visit to the site that the building would be delivered as quickly as possible, without cutting corners on quality, and using local labour wherever possible.
Australian Human Development Counsellor Dr Tristan Armstrong praised the work of local health workers and highlighted the value of Australia’s ongoing support to the Solomon Islands health sector.
“As the number one partner supporting the Solomon Islands in the health sector, Australia understands the importance of strengthening local health skills and systems so that once this world-class health facility is built, it can provide high-quality health services to the people of Naha and the country as a whole for many years to come.”
