Janot’s nine hours of work are summed up in eight albums ProjectUltimate NothingReleased in 2016. The album includes concert recordings, improvisations, and also includes archival recordings from home studios. Live music and emerging music have always been important to Janota.
“The archives are philatelic, a collection of trilobites. That can be interesting, but seeing a living trilobite is less interesting,” he said in an earlier interview.
Milan Páleš of the Indies Scope publishing house said that with Janota’s departure, the Czech nation is losing one of its most original artists, singer-songwriters and poets at the moment. “As a music publisher, we tried to constantly portray his entire long musical career starting from the 1970s, but due to the author’s perfectionism, not much was officially released. But what was finally released was one of the most interesting things about folk music – the minimalist scene was born. Behind Oldřich Janota, whether he played alone or with a band, there was always a great and interesting body of work,” he said.
Janota was born on August 27, 1949 in Pilsen. He began performing in the first half of the 1970s. At the turn of the 1970s and 1980s he gave concerts with Irena and Wojtěch Havel, and his musical concept was very close to the works of the New Age Tour. In 2009 the album “Lost in the World: A Tribute to Oldřich Janota” was released, in which several musicians performed Janota’s songs. Janota also wrote the play “The Chained Flea” and several books.
