Multi-lane free movement will be implemented gradually: Hadimuryono

The switch from card payments to contactless payments will not be complete at first. It will be comprehensive later.

Public Works and Public Housing Minister Basuki Hadimuryono said on Wednesday that the cashless contactless toll transaction technology or Multi-Lane Free Flow (MLFF) will be implemented in phases.

“The switch from card payments to contactless payments will not be fully implemented initially. Later, there will be a full switch,” he said.

Hadimuryono added that the gradual implementation of the technology will start with the application of the Single Lane Free Flow (SLFF) and guardrail system on the Bali-Mandala Toll Road this year.

Meanwhile, the general manager of the People’s Republic of Uruguay’s Infrastructure Financing Department, Triono Junoasmono, said the department would negotiate with its Hungarian counterparts on the MLFF.

“With the shift from MLFF to SLFF, we will negotiate it later. Hopefully, we can implement it in a transitional manner,” he added.

SLFF is a non-stop payment system for each toll lane. Its implementation is a phase in the promotion of MLFF, which will later be applied to all toll roads in Indonesia.

The MLFF system uses Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) technology and is transacted through the Cantas app, which is combined with ERI (Electronic Registration and Identification) data or vehicle ownership data owned by the Indonesian Police Traffic Corps.

The purpose of promoting contactless toll transactions is to improve the service of toll roads to the public.

MLFF is expected to reduce delays and shorten travel times on toll roads, thereby increasing the competitiveness of the road network system and achieving the concept of fair pricing, where road users are charged according to the routes they take.

The implementation of the MLFF system requires some discipline, including aspects of using the system using the Global Positioning Satellite (GPS) system.

Road users will need to download software, register and then pay a deposit to use the system.
