The former prime minister will be charged over remarks he made ahead of the Nyangiri by-election.

(FMT) – Former Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin will be charged with sedition at the Gua Musang Court tomorrow morning.

According to sources in the Attorney General’s Chambers, the charge under the Sedition Act was in relation to a speech made by Perikatan Nasional chairman Muhyiddin Yassin on the eve of the Ngeri by-election.

Muhyiddin courted controversy when he claimed that “for some reason” he was not invited by the former king to be sworn in as prime minister after the 15th general election (GE15) even though he “has the numbers to form a government”.

His comments sparked 29 police reports against him and drew a rebuke from the Pahang palace.

Muhyiddin had previously defended his remarks, insisting they were true, and later said he had filed 115 statutory declarations to support his claims.

Muhyiddin will become the third opposition leader to be charged with sedition.

Sanusi Nor, the Nationalist Party’s election director, was charged in July last year with making inflammatory remarks attacking the royal family. He has pleaded not guilty to both charges.

In November, Bersatu’s information director Razali Idris was charged with making seditious remarks against the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC). He also requested to stand trial.
