Small businesses in Mthatha are worried about operating at a loss after the Eastern Cape King Sabata Dalindyebo local government announced an 11.03% increase in electricity prices from July 1.
Mthatha businessman Vuyisile Ntlabathi, who is president of the Eastern Cape Chamber of Commerce and represents many small businesses in the region, said many businesses in the region have struggled because of unreliable electricity supply.
“The electricity supply in Mthatha is erratic and many small businesses are suffering as a result. The increase in electricity tariffs is a blow and will cause many businesses to close down. Our town is known for rampant crime and we are concerned that the crime rate may increase further in the coming months due to job losses,” Ntrabati said.
