1 August 2024 (Nairobi) – Medical charity Doctors Without Borders (MSF) on Wednesday called for an end to repeated attacks on hospitals in El Fasher, Sudan, and a blockade of medical supplies, warning that it was causing a rising death toll.
More than 2,170 wounded people have been treated at MSF-supported hospitals in the city and more than 300 have died from their injuries since fighting escalated 80 days ago, the group said in a statement.
The statement said the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) had seized MSF supply trucks over the past four weeks, threatening the basic resources of the Saudi hospital, the last functioning public hospital in El Fasher.
“All parties to the conflict must prioritize the protection of health facilities and ensure unhindered access to health care for all,” said Stephane Dogon, head of MSF’s emergency response in Sudan.
RSF did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
MSF said repeated attacks on hospitals highlighted a disregard for humanitarian law and civilian life, including a shelling of a Saudi hospital on July 29 that killed three nursing staff and injured 25.
Doctors Without Borders said its trucks carrying essential surgical kits and therapeutic food for malnourished children were detained by MSF in Kabkabiya.
“The death toll will rise further if the blockade on humanitarian aid is not urgently lifted,” Dogon said.
