French medical charity Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) has evacuated its international staff and suspended operations in Ulang County, Upper Nile State, due to threats from local residents.
The group announced the decision in a statement sent to Radio Tamazuj on Friday.
Aurélie Lécrivain, Deputy Field Communications Coordinator for MSF in South Sudan, confirmed the evacuation of the MSF Level 2 hospital and the suspension of activities. He said the evacuation took place on August 15, 2024 in response to escalating threats against the organization’s personnel.
“Doctors Without Borders did have to evacuate some of its staff from Ulang, Upper Nile State, on August 15 due to a serious threat from a local resident,” Le Crewan said.
“As a result, we have temporarily suspended some activities at the MSF Ulang Level II Hospital.”
Le Creevin stressed that the safety of staff and patients is MSF’s top priority and revealed that the organization will only resume operations if the safety of medical facilities and personnel is ensured.
The decision highlights the precarious conditions in which humanitarian organizations operate in conflict zones.
As MSF’s Level 2 Care Hospital in Ulang has been an important provider of health services, the suspension of services is expected to have a significant impact on the local community.
