The crew of the Zr.Ms. Trop had an extraordinary experience. The air defense command frigate sank a ship with a missile attack near Hawaii. This happened last week during the world’s largest naval exercise “Rim of the Pacific” (Rimpac), but was only announced now.

The target of Troop’s attack was a decommissioned U.S. Navy ship. The launch of the Harpoon rocket was the highlight of the crew’s training. “It was really impressive to actually get a ship into the basement,” said Tjerk, the command center officer. “It was a learning experience to apply all the procedures and use the ship’s systems for their intended purpose.”

Medium-range Harpoon anti-ship missiles are launched from eight inclined launch tubes amidships. The so-called “fire and forget” missiles fly to a predetermined area. There they turn on their radars and then attack the target independently.

Huge added value

De Tromp features 40 naval vessels, 170 aircraft and land forces from 29 countries, training in all aspects of naval warfare. This also includes those of the highest violence. Commanding Officer Lieutenant Yvonne van Bosekom described the exercise as unique and of great added value to the Royal Navy.

Military relations

This is the first time that Dutch naval vessels are taking part in the RIMPAC exercise. The Defence Diving Team has been taking part in the competition for some time. Through RIMAPC, the Netherlands strengthens its military relations with its allies and cooperation with new allies in the Indo-Pacific region.
