With over 250 sailors, the Navy provided logistical support and medical capabilities to the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden over the past 4 months. The Zr. MS Karel Dorman provided fuel, ammunition, cargo, etc. to other participating vessels. In addition, the ship also served as the flagship for maritime operations at one point.

Avoid drone attacks

The ship is avoiding Dronesand rocket attacks. This is done by taking an image of the environment with radar. For example, during the night of July 8, the crew alerted the Greek Navy ship HS Psara of the approach of 2 drones. The Greeks subsequently neutralized this.

Cargo Transportation

The Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden are connected by the narrow Bab el-Mandeb Strait. It is an important route for commercial shipping between Asia and Europe. Like other European countries, the Netherlands has an economic interest in safe and unimpeded maritime transport of goods. If this is not possible, Dutch consumers may face higher prices for products.

The ship has a hospital with two operating rooms dedicated to treating such cases and a medical team of about 50 people.

With a length of 205 meters, Zr. Karel Dürmann is the largest ship in the navy.
