First case in Sweden
Sweden’s Public Health Agency said in a statement that a person seeking treatment in Stockholm was diagnosed with MPOX caused by Clade I, a more contagious and dangerous variant. “This is the first case of Clade I diagnosed outside the African continent,” the agency added.
The entity confirmed to this agency that the same strain of the virus appeared in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) in September 2023. Epidemiologist Magnus Gisslen said in a statement that the person was infected while visiting an African region where an outbreak of the MPOX branch type I has occurred.

The patient received treatment. The agency assured that “Sweden is ready to safely diagnose, isolate and treat patients with MPOX.” In addition, he stressed that the patient’s treatment will not affect the risk to the general population, which is currently considered very low by the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC).
Mpox was first identified in humans in 1970 in what is now the Democratic Republic of the Congo (formerly Zaire).
