The Transitional National Legislative Assembly (TNLA) on Monday hailed the national basketball team for its outstanding performance at the 2024 Paris Olympics despite being eliminated in the final Group C match on Saturday.

The Bright Stars lost 96-85 to Serbia on Saturday, ending an exciting run for the only African team in the men’s basketball tournament.

Speaking at the plenary session in Juba, the First Deputy Speaker, Nathaniel Oyet Perino, commended the team for its historic performance.

Oyette said that although the Bright Stars lost to a historic and strong team in the basketball championship, they still added color to the Olympics with an impressive performance.

He said the people of South Sudan were very proud to see non-citizens carrying their flag at the Olympics.

“I want to take this opportunity to praise our basketball team, which participated in the Olympics and created miracles. In fact, our team’s opponents have a long history in basketball championships. The United States, Serbia, and even Puerto Rico,” he said.

Oyet added: “For starters, it’s not easy to play with players who have been playing in this arena for decades. We are very proud that our flag is carried by non-South Sudanese. Europeans, Latin Americans and even Americans. This shows the power of sports in raising our international reputation.”

South Sudan qualified for the September 2023 Olympics thanks to their performance at the World Cup, where they were the best performing African team.

The team achieved the biggest win in the country’s basketball history by defeating Angola at the 2023 FIBA World Cup.

The national federation is led by former NBA player Luol Deng.
