Most of the fires that broke out in Izmir on Turkey’s west coast four days ago were brought under control, Turkish authorities announced on Sunday.
The fire, which broke out Thursday evening in Izmir, Turkey’s third most populous city, quickly threatened residential areas and was partially under control Saturday evening, but hot spots in forested areas were still burning.
“There is no danger in the area overlooking the city. Firefighters have contained the fire in a ravine. Thank God, the fire in Izmir’s Yamanlar district is now under control. Our cooling efforts will continue,” Agriculture and Forestry Minister Ibrahim Yumchili said on Sunday.
The minister noted that among the new fires that broke out in the province on Saturday evening, the one affecting the coastal resort of Cesme was brought under control with no casualties after people were evacuated from residential areas at risk.
He added that the fire was still spreading in the steep valleys of the Menderes district, 20 km south of Izmir, but slowly.
Urban Planning Minister Murat Kurum said 29 people were taken to hospital and 43 buildings were damaged in the fire in the province.
In addition to cats and dogs, the fires also killed many wild animals.
Helicopters continued to drop water on areas where the fire was burning Sunday morning.
Firefighters from several Turkish cities were sent to the area as part of the reinforcements, and the army and police were also mobilised.
Five fires are still burning in forests and woodlands in other cities across Turkey, including Bolu in the northwest of the country and Eden in the west.
In June last year, a fire in Mardin in southeastern Türkiye killed 15 people.
