Hans Kluge, the World Health Organization’s regional director for Europe, ruled out the possibility of monkeypox turning into a new epidemic similar to the new coronavirus because we know a lot about it and how to control it and prevent its spread.
AFP quoted Krug as saying at a press conference: “Monkeypox is not a new coronavirus, neither the strain 1 that caused the current epidemic spreading in Central and East Africa, nor the strain 2 that caused the COVID-19 outbreak in the world in 2022.” And declared a state of emergency.
Katherine Smallwood, an official at the World Health Organization’s European Office, explained that what has been discovered so far is a group of virus mutants identified by scientists that are only transmitted among humans, denying cases caused by the “1B” virus. “The virus has been isolated or recorded, and it is transmitted through animals.
Smallwood also confirmed that the new virus is different from the “1E1F” strain known as the “Congo Basin” virus, which is only transmitted through infected animals.
