Moncef Belaid, who died on Tuesday in Tunisia, was a true industrial leader in both the public and private sectors. As a central engineer, he would soon be wooed by Azouz Lasram, Tijani Chelly and other pioneers and builders of economic development upon his return to Tunisia and would step into the stirrup of the General Directorate of Industry. With this experience, he would head several domestic companies before starting his own.

However, Moncef Belaid would be recalled and return to military service, being named Minister of Industry, Mines and Energy in the government of Hédi Bacouche on 27 July 1988. He would serve in the government under Hamed Karoui until March 1990, being promoted to Minister of National Economy.

Moncef Belaid devoted his efforts to private sector activities and founded the Société Générale des Plastisants (SGP), a second African company, producing plasticizers (DOP – DINP – DIDP), and redeploying SOMEF to produce electrical equipment, which he founded before entering government in 1988. He will close it in 1993, launching a wide range of products in partnership with Italian industrialist AVE, and SOMEF will continue to grow and diversify. Moncef Belaid will bring his expertise and rigor to make it a leader in this sector.

Allah Yarhamu.
