Before Iran reacts to Israel’s crime of assassinating Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in the heart of Tehran and the global war it could provoke in the Middle East, here is a reminder of a warning issued almost two decades ago by former U.S. National Security Advisor Zbigniew Brzezinski about the dangers of such a war: “It would be a disaster for both the United States and Israel if they were drawn into a military conflict with Iran. Anyone familiar with the geopolitical dynamics of the Persian Gulf region knows that such a war would have devastating economic and political consequences for the global economy and the international system… It would also isolate the United States and create an environment in which its global hegemony is rapidly becoming a thing of the past. Moreover, it would have fatal consequences for Israel itself.
