Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi will travel to Russia on Monday for talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin, Kremlin officials said, marking Modi’s first visit to Russia since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
The Russian government said in a statement that Putin and Modi discussed the development of India-Russia relations, which are generally friendly. The Indian government has so far refrained from condemning Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and stressed the need for a peaceful resolution to the war.
However, as Russia strengthens its ties with China, there could be some rifts in the relationship between India and Russia. Tensions between the Indian and Chinese governments have been high since a 2020 border clash between the two countries that left 20 Indian and four Chinese soldiers dead.
